Origin
Noah McVicker of Cincinnati-based soap producer Kutol Products invented the non-toxic, non-staining, reusable modelling compound that would become known as "Play-Doh." It was a malleable, putty-like material that became known as "Play-Doh." When Kroger Grocery asked for a product that could remove coal residue off wallpaper, they came up with this solution.
Following World War II, the move from coal-based house heating to natural gas, which resulted in a reduction in internal soot, as well as the development of washable vinyl-based wallpaper, resulted in a significant decline in the market for wallpaper cleaning putty. Joe McVicker, McVicker's nephew, joined Kutol with the mission of rescuing the firm from its impending bankruptcy. Joe McVicker was the brother-in-law of Kay Zufall, a nursery school teacher who had read a newspaper storey on producing art projects out of wallpaper cleaning putty. Joe McVicker was the brother-in-law of Kay Zufall. 0 Noah McVicker (who also marketed the putty) and Joe McVicker were encouraged to make it as a children's toy after seeing how much her pupils appreciated it. Joe McVicker and his uncle Noah had planned to call it "Rainbow Modeling Compound," but Zufall and her husband came up with the moniker Play-Doh.
