A Look Back On The History Of LEGO

On the 10th of August, it will be LEGO's birthday! It will mark 91 years since LEGO first started and to celebrate it we will be diving into the extensive history of one of the most famous toy companies in the world.

The story of LEGO started in Denmark, way back in 1932, founded by a carpenter called Ole Kirk Christiansen, with the origin of the name LEGO meaning “play well” in Danish. They originally produced wooden toys and furniture, however, a fire destroyed their factory in 1942 and they decided to switch their focus to plastic toys, which were becoming increasingly popular at the time. The first LEGO brick wasn't made until 1949 and was a simple but revolutionary design. It allowed children to assemble them in endless combinations and stretch their imaginations.

With the LEGO brick quickly becoming a hit, it allowed the company to expand their product line in 1950. This included a variety of themed sets, such as trains, cars, and houses. Then in the 1960s LEGO released its first figures, which would later become the massively well-known minifigures.

As LEGO became more and more popular throughout the 70s and 80s the company started introducing new themes such as space, pirates, and medieval castles. They also began producing large, complex sets, such as the iconic LEGO Technic line, which allowed older builders to create intricate models with working parts and mechanisms.

However, during the 1990s LEGO faced a challenge. Electronic toys and video games were on the rise and they were struggling to compete with the latest toys to release. So, to combat this, they collaborated with famous brands such as Star Wars to release LEGO Star Wars sets and figures, so children could make their very own stories in a galaxy far, far away.

Today, LEGO remains one of the most popular and beloved toy brands in the world. The company has expanded its product line to include a variety of sets and themes, from Harry Potter to Marvel superheroes. They have even created amazing movies and TV series that brings the LEGO world to life.
