Barbie Movie: What We Know So Far
Barbie is oh so close to getting her very own live-action blockbuster movie. Barbie has proved herself to be a juggernaut in keeping relevant even after so many decades. From her early beginnings with impossible beauty standards and a fashionable wardrobe to die for to the more modern and diverse interpretation that inspires children to be who they want to be and be happy and comfortable in their skin while they do it. With Barbie strutting from strength to strength, it only makes sense for her to grace the big screen in all her glory.
There is very little known about the feature length film at the moment, but according to Deadline, it’s very close to getting the greenlight. If it gets the go ahead, shooting will begin 2022. Margot Robbie is already signed on to star as Barbie because there is no better actress to portray the blonde bombshell Barbie and Greta Gerwig is set to direct. Greta co-wrote the movie with the help of her husband and fellow film maker, Noah Baumach, which indicates it will not be the typical take on Barbie and most likely focus on the relationship between Barbie and Ken.
The Cast
Could there be any better casting for Ken and Barbie than Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling? While Margot Robbie has been attached to the project for some time, Ryan Gosling is in the final negotiations to play Ken according to Deadline. Ryan initially turned down the role but the studio persisted, saying Gosling was their only choice.
The Director
Gerwig has previously directed Lady Bird and Little Women and is set to direct Barbie. Gerwig also co-wrote the screenplay with her Husband, Baumbach, who is most famous for writing and directing screenplays about divorce and New York City, which could allow for a very realistic story to play out for these iconic characters, perhaps showing their relationship struggles.
Previous Concepts
The Barbie film has gone through a few forms before this one stuck. When the rights were owned by Sony, the role of Barbie was connected to Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway at different points. Once the project expired with Sony, Warner Brothers pick the concept up. The plot for the previous project was that Barbie gets evicted from Barbieland for not conforming to the other Barbie’s idea of perfection, going on a journey of self-discovery to realise that true perfection comes from within. We are not sure if this will be the plot for the latest version but cannot wait either way.
Margot Robbie’s Thoughts
Margot Robbie spoke about the upcoming role in an interview with British vogue in June, “It comes with a lot of baggage. And a lot of nostalgia connections,”. She continued, “But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear “Barbie” and think, “I know what that movie is going to be”, and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, “Oh, well, maybe I don’t””.
What do you think about the upcoming Barbie movie? Will you be going to see it in the cinema on release or are you happy to keep Barbie’s personality to the imagination rather than the big screen?
